Steve
Michaels

CEO

Steve Michaels builds the platforms that states run on. As CEO and founder of Breakline, he helps governments modernize how residents, visitors, and businesses interact with the state—designing systems that make complex services feel simple, secure, and intuitive. Under his leadership, Breakline has grown from a boutique digital consultancy into a product and technology company behind enterprise-scale systems for licensing, grants and loans, tax and revenue, and integrated payments.

Breakline's work powers Delaware's digital government—from Go DE, the statewide payments platform, to Business One Stop and beyond—with Go DE alone processing payments across 130+ state organizations, spanning online checkout, hosted digital intake, school payments, and in-person point-of-sale. Steve is a trusted partner to public-sector leaders retiring legacy systems, standing up multi-tenant payment engines, and launching citizen-facing portals, with deep expertise in secure payment orchestration, tokenization, and the APIs that connect core government systems to the cloud.

Before founding Breakline, Steve spent more than a decade as a technology entrepreneur building complex, real-time systems at scale—SaaS adtech platforms, real-time trading systems, lead-generation engines, and IoT sensor networks—alongside next-generation consumer banking applications that generated hundreds of millions of dollars in value for top financial brands.

Steve received an MBA from the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, an MSE from The University of Texas at Austin, and a BSME from Rutgers University. He lives in Jersey City with his wife, Regan, and their two daughters.

Anders
Scholl

CTO

Anders has a lifelong passion for complex systems, and the many fascinating tensions inherent in constructing, maintaining, and effectively relating with them. As CTO of Breakline, his expertise guides us in constructing robust, flexible, and understandable solutions, combining curiosity and excitement for new technologies and methodologies with experience and pragmatism that recognizes the value of proven tools and practices. Over the years he has been intimately involved in guiding and implementing dozens of projects, large and small. Whatever a project's scope or industry a single user or tens of thousands; finance, health care, manufacturing, or communication he's committed to building systems that harness sophisticated technology in the service of real people's real problems.

Anders lives in Olympia with his wife, small dog, and two children.

Laura
Michaels

Creative Advisor

With more than a decade of experience leading teams in strategic marketing and planning, design, user experience, and technology, Laura brings an invaluable combination of vision and creativity to Breakline as a member of the advisory board. She inspires and challenges her colleagues and clients to envision new ways to think about products and services—and, ultimately, how to make offerings more relevant to consumers.

Throughout her career, Laura's original and inventive projects have garnered industry praise, including several coveted One Show Interactive Pencils and Clio Awards, and most recently, a Webby Award for Financial Services/Banking.

Laura lives with her daughter, Kassandra, and dog, Sonna, and loves life in Montauk, where she can be found surfing, sourcing vintage treasures, or behind her ever present camera.

Tolga
Erkal

Head of Programs

Tolga Erkal is Breakline’s Software Development Manager, combining deep experience in agile delivery, product ownership, and user experience design. A seasoned Scrum Master and senior engagement/project manager, he specializes in leading cross-functional teams, aligning stakeholders, and turning complex requirements into clear, high-quality software releases.

Tolga is skilled in multi-disciplinary team management, including resource planning, sprint and release scheduling, and ensuring projects are delivered on time and to spec in a collaborative, transparent way. He also leads our analytics and data-informed design efforts and is a Google Analytics–certified professional, using measurement and insight to continuously improve digital products and user journeys.

Tolga lives in West Chester with his wife and son.

Podsiad

Creative Director

Matthew is a software developer with a sharp eye for visual design and a passion for crafting beautiful, usable digital experiences. He focuses on the full lifecycle of front-end development—from concept and prototyping through implementation, optimization, and ongoing refinement—always aiming for interfaces that feel as good as they look.

Dedicated to web standards, performance, and accessibility, Matthew builds interfaces that are inclusive, resilient, and thoughtfully designed down to the smallest detail. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and son.

Head of User Experience

Orian Marx is a senior software developer focused on making complex systems feel simple, usable, and fast. With over a decade of experience in web software development and a background as an entrepreneur, he has co-founded three startups in the digital information management space, giving him a deep appreciation for real-world user needs and product fit.

Orian specializes in designing and building clean, intuitive interfaces on top of sophisticated back-end logic—translating intricate workflows into experiences that everyday users can understand and trust. He has spoken at SxSW Interactive and the API Strategy Conference, sharing his perspective on practical, human-centered software design.

Orian lives in Upstate New York with his wife, Abril.

Lead User Experience

He has been a speaker at SxSW Interactive and the API Strategy Conference. Orian enjoys devising simple yet robust interfaces for complex software.
